New to ChatGPT and AI? You’re not alone — and you don’t need a tech background to understand any of this. This ChatGPT glossary explains the most common terms you’ll run into, in plain English. No jargon, no assumptions. Just clear, simple definitions you can actually use.

A
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
AI is software that can do things that normally require human thinking — like understanding language, recognizing patterns, or making decisions. When people say “AI,” they usually mean computer programs that can learn and respond in surprisingly human-like ways. ChatGPT is one example of AI.
AI Chatbot
A program you can have a text conversation with, just like texting a friend — except you’re talking to a computer. ChatGPT is the most well-known AI chatbot. You type a question or request, and it types back a helpful response.
AI Model
The “brain” behind an AI tool. It’s the software that was trained on large amounts of text so it can understand and generate language. When ChatGPT gets an update or a new version, that usually means the AI model behind it has been improved.
Algorithm
A set of instructions a computer follows to complete a task. Think of it like a recipe — step-by-step directions that tell the computer what to do. Every AI tool runs on algorithms.
B
Bot
Short for “robot” — a software program that does tasks automatically. An AI chatbot like ChatGPT is a type of bot that’s designed for conversation. Not all bots are smart — some just follow basic scripts. ChatGPT is much more advanced than that.
C
ChatGPT
A free AI tool made by a company called OpenAI. You can type questions, ask for help, or have a conversation with it — and it responds in natural, human-like language. It can help you write emails, explain things, brainstorm ideas, plan trips, and much more. You can use it at chatgpt.com without creating an account.
ChatGPT Free vs. ChatGPT Plus
ChatGPT has a free version that anyone can use. ChatGPT Plus is a paid upgrade (currently $20/month) that gives you access to newer, faster AI models and extra features. Most beginners don’t need Plus — the free version is powerful enough to get started.
Chat History
A record of your past conversations with ChatGPT. It’s saved in the sidebar on the left side of the screen so you can go back and continue an old conversation or find something you discussed before.
Context
The information ChatGPT remembers during a conversation. If you tell it you’re planning a birthday party for your grandchild, it keeps that context in mind as you keep chatting. If you start a brand new conversation, it won’t remember what you said before.
Conversation
Each time you start a new chat with ChatGPT, that’s a conversation. You can have as many conversations as you want. Each one starts fresh unless you continue a previous one from your chat history.
Copilot (Microsoft Copilot)
Microsoft’s AI assistant, built into Windows, Edge, and Office apps. It works similarly to ChatGPT — you can ask it questions and get conversational answers. It’s one of the main alternatives to ChatGPT.
D
Data
Information. In the world of AI, data means all the text, images, numbers, and other information that was used to teach the AI how to understand and respond to you. The more quality data an AI is trained on, the better it tends to be.
Deep Learning
A type of AI that learns by finding patterns in very large amounts of data — similar to how your brain gets better at recognizing faces the more people you meet. It’s the technology behind ChatGPT and most modern AI tools. You don’t need to understand how it works to use it.
F
Fine-Tuning
When developers take an existing AI model and train it further on specific information to make it better at a particular task. Think of it like a chef who already knows how to cook but then takes a class to specialize in Italian cuisine.
Free Version
The version of ChatGPT you can use without paying anything. It gives you access to the core AI assistant, and it’s more than enough for most everyday tasks like writing, brainstorming, learning, and getting answers to questions.
G
Gemini (Google Gemini)
Google’s AI assistant, similar to ChatGPT. You can find it at gemini.google.com. It’s another option for people who want to try different AI tools. Each one has slightly different strengths.
Generative AI
AI that can create new content — like writing a paragraph, generating an image, or composing music. ChatGPT is a generative AI because it generates (creates) new text every time you ask it something. It doesn’t just search for pre-written answers — it writes fresh responses.
GPT
Stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer.” That’s a technical name for the type of AI model that powers ChatGPT. You don’t need to remember what it stands for — just know that GPT is the engine under the hood, and ChatGPT is the tool you interact with.
GPTs (Custom GPTs)
Special versions of ChatGPT that have been customized for a specific purpose — like a recipe helper, a travel planner, or a writing coach. You can find them in the ChatGPT app under “Explore GPTs.” They’re free to try and can make ChatGPT even more useful for specific tasks.
H
Hallucination
When AI makes something up that sounds true but isn’t. ChatGPT can occasionally present false information with confidence — like citing a book that doesn’t exist or giving incorrect facts. This is why it’s always a good idea to double-check important information, especially medical, legal, or financial details.
L
Large Language Model (LLM)
A type of AI that has been trained on massive amounts of text so it can understand and generate human language. ChatGPT is built on a large language model. “Large” refers to the enormous amount of information it was trained on — not the size of the program itself.
M
Machine Learning
A type of AI where the computer learns from examples instead of being told exactly what to do. Instead of following a fixed set of rules, it looks at patterns in data and gets better over time — kind of like how you learn to cook better the more recipes you try.
Model
See “AI Model” above. When people say “the model behind ChatGPT,” they mean the trained AI system that understands your questions and writes responses.
N
Natural Language
Regular, everyday language — the way you normally talk or write. ChatGPT understands natural language, which means you don’t need to use special commands or code. Just type the way you’d talk to a helpful friend.
Neural Network
A computer system loosely inspired by how the human brain works. It’s made up of layers of connected points that process information. Neural networks are the foundation of modern AI, but you never need to think about them to use ChatGPT.
O
OpenAI
The company that created ChatGPT. Founded in 2015, OpenAI is an AI research company based in San Francisco. They build and maintain ChatGPT and release updates to make it better over time.
Output
Whatever ChatGPT gives you back after you ask it something. If you ask it to write a thank-you note, the thank-you note it creates is the “output.” If you ask a question, the answer is the output.
P
Plugin
An add-on feature that gives ChatGPT extra abilities — like browsing the web, reading documents, or creating images. Plugins expand what ChatGPT can do beyond just text conversations. Some are available in the free version, while others require ChatGPT Plus.
Prompt
The message or question you type into ChatGPT. Everything you send to ChatGPT is called a “prompt.” The better your prompt, the better the response you’ll get. For example, “Write me a short thank-you note to my neighbor for watching my dog” is a prompt.
Prompt Engineering
The skill of writing better prompts to get better results from ChatGPT. It sounds technical, but it’s really just about being clear and specific in what you ask for. Instead of “help me write something,” try “help me write a polite email to reschedule my dentist appointment.”
R
Response
What ChatGPT says back to you after you send a prompt. Each response is generated fresh — ChatGPT writes a new answer every time, even if you ask the same question twice. That’s why answers can sometimes be slightly different each time.
S
Siri
Apple’s voice assistant on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Siri is a type of AI, but it works differently from ChatGPT. Siri is designed for quick commands (“set a timer”), while ChatGPT is designed for deeper conversations and more complex tasks.
T
Token
The small chunks of text that AI uses to process language. A token can be a word, part of a word, or even a punctuation mark. You don’t need to worry about tokens as a regular user — just know that ChatGPT has a limit on how much text it can handle in a single conversation.
Training Data
The massive collection of text that was used to teach ChatGPT how to understand and use language. This includes books, articles, websites, and other written material. ChatGPT’s training data has a cutoff date, which means it may not know about very recent events.
V
Voice Mode
A feature in ChatGPT’s mobile app that lets you talk out loud instead of typing. You speak your question, and ChatGPT speaks its answer back to you — like having a conversation with a helpful assistant. It’s especially useful if you find typing on a phone difficult.
